Challenges for GDF SUEZ in Asia |
22/02/2011 |

|
With the world’s highest growth rate Asia is a strategic region for GDF SUEZ, and especially Thailand where its subsidiary, Glow Energy, holds approximately 10% of the electricity generation market share. But it faces many challenges. Khun Volk Pongsivapai, the COO* of Glow Energy, discussed the matter with us. |
|
Résumé of the video :
1° Having a good energy mix for electricity generation is vital to secure power supply and production costs. Natural Gas accounts for roughly 70% of Thailand mix, and is distributed by PPT, a state-owned company. Risks are consequent since the entire country is greatly impacted by gas market prices and availability. Coal and renewable energies are chosen options by GDF SUEZ to reduce those risks.
2° Developing coal-firing plants is possible now technology has minimized its environmental impact and increased its efficiency. Proof of that statement is it remains the main fuel for many countries around the world (USA, Germany, Australia, India, Europe’s average fuel mix…).
However, developing coal fired power plant in Thailand has been a major challenge due to negative perception on the lignite power plant of local communities.
3° Thailand past regulations weren’t adapted to feasible sustainable projects. Nevertheless, Glow Energy has already invested in an Hydro power plant in Laos, and is studying further investments now regulations are evolving : expansion of the hydro plant, and a wind and solar farms in Thailand.
Renewable energies are a strategic challenge for GDF SUEZ as they could improve its energy mix, and therefore the quality and profitability of its business, and support the company growth objective in Asia.
The merge with International Power has a major impact on these figures as it will bring valuable assets to strengthen GDF SUEZ position in Asia.
