Water for tomorrow in Australia

18/03/2011

If you think that Australia is one of the driest country of the world, you’re right. And it means a lof of challenges in the drinking water sector.

Australia is one of the driest country in the world. It means that underground water (Aquifer) is limited. Moreover, rains are very irregular from one year to another. During the last 10 years, Australia has known a dramatic drought. And no rain means no water in the dams. That is why australian authorities have decided to build desalination plants, seawater being the most reliable source of water. Degrémont, a GDF SUEZ subsidiary, has to adapt itself to this evolving market.

Degrémont Australia has always been a project-driven company. Main clients are State Authorities, and when they decide to build a plant, a bid is made and all competitors try to win this bid. That is why project developers have to be very performant. And they are ! The proof is that the company is currently building in Melbourne one of the largest desalination plants of the world.

But in 2011, 70% of Australian capital cities are already equipped with desalination facilities. This means new challenges for Degrémont.

The first one is to manage and maintain existing facilities and to adapt its business model which will probably evolve from project-driven to asset management. The second challenge is to find new clients and new types of projects. For the desalination, new clients are first the smallest cities of the country which are not already equipped. Secondly, the mining industry is quickly evolving, particularly in the west of the country (for example the coal seam gas). And in the process of this industry, a lot of water is used. Concerning the new types of project, recycling waste water will represent a lot of new opportunities for Degrémont.
