Smile & Business

Our tour around the world is an incredible opportunity to discover different work environments and how people interact in a company. What about Thai people?

The first thing we have heard about Thailand is that it is the “land of smile”. And it’s true. But the Thai smile can hide a multitude of emotions. If Thais smile when they are happy or amused, they smile as well when they are embarrassed or furious. They have to “save face”, stay calm and non-competitive. All behavior is controlled, which is in accordance with Buddhism, the religion of the vast majority. That is why it is very important to pick up signals from body language and the context in order to interpret a message correctly. Easy to say!

Thai Society is very group oriented. Thais work well in teams. Colleagues will be friends at work and outside work, which is not necessarily the case in Europe. They socialize particularly at lunch time. People bring food from home and eat together at the canteen.

For Thai people, it is very important to feel at work just like at home. For example, some of Glow employees in Rayong take off their shoes and put sandals during lunch break. Another example is this picture of women’s toilets…

In this context, the main challenge is that everybody (Thai people and expats) find his place, speak up and respect the behavior of each other. And at Glow, it works very well!
